Food Engine, New York City

Regarded as the first Food Engine prototype in Brooklyn, New York City, the building sets an pioneer example on how, within a dense urban environment, the concept of urban farming could turn the space into series of food production cycles, which is to integrate the circular relationship between food production, preparation, consumption and recycling in a single urban space, instead of constantly relying on food that is transported far away from rural areas.

The Food Engine, taking full advantage of various types of hydroponic systems, located at different parts of the buildings with an internal water cycle system, not only create zones that grow vegetables but also transform the entire spatial qualities into a micro-ecologic system. Some will become the raw ingredients in the kitchen. The hydroponic farm provides green leisure space and healthy eating while recycling food scraps and grep water from the kitchen. While, the others will be directly sold to the surrounding neighborhoods within Brooklyn, to ensure a high level of freshness and minimize the costs of transportation.
